Lauren and James’ wedding at Rudding Park Hotel near Harrogate and Leeds had exactly the feeling I love at weddings, mainly a fun vibe with plenty of emotion!
This is one of Yorkshires best wedding venues and has so much personality – it’s also one place you don’t need to worry about (not that I do anymore) if it rains.
Morning Preps at Rudding Park
The day started with Lauren during bridal preps at Rudding Park Hotel. I generally arrive around 3 hours before ceremony time and captured everything that was happening – including the fun, laughter and a little crying.
Today was special and it was lovely to see the family again after photographing Lauren’s sisters wedding nearly 18 months ago. Getting booked on a recommendation means you’re doing something right of course – even if it does put the pressure on to deliver the goods as before.
A few photo ‘recreations’ were part of todays requirements – recreations with a little twist – I don’t want to repeat things as everyone and every wedding is so different.
During preps myself and Simon the videographer popped to the cabins to see the lads getting ready – and attempting to tie ties!!
The Ceremony at Rudding Park
Soon enough ceremony time approached and the guests began gathering for the main event.
Then Lauren appeared.
She walked towards the ceremony space with a huge smile and the odd tear
James saw her and instantly grinned. That reaction alone made the moment.
Although civil ceremonies can be quite scripted, this did feel different, personal and warm.
One thing I do like to do is photograph what is happening behind the couple during the ceremony – as this is where most of the emotion is likely to be. Both dads crying here by the way 🙂
Confetti, Canapés and Big Smiles
After the ceremony, everyone moved outside for confetti and canapés.
Confetti moments are always brilliant. Lauren and James walked through a cloud of colour while guests cheered loudly.
Our couple then jumped in a gold cart for a quick getaway.
Group Photos Without the Stress
Next came group photographs.
Now, group photos sometimes get a bad reputation. However, they really don’t need to feel slow or awkward.
Lauren and James wanted quick, relaxed family photos. So we kept things simple and efficient.
We used the gardens as a backdrop. The greenery and open space worked perfectly. The low sun during winter does add a complication but experience means you never ever have the guests looking in to the sun.
A small amount of fill light was all that was required to make the shots pop!
The best part? Nobody felt like they had been standing around for ages.
Experience really helps here. After photographing weddings across Yorkshire, I know how to keep group photos flowing, fun and efficient.
Portraits and Around the Grounds
After the group photos, I stole Lauren and James away for ten minutes for a few portraits.
Rudding Park has beautiful paths, trees, structures and quiet corners.
No stiff posing required. If you can help a couple to feel relaxed and comfortable it’s a fantastic enjoyable experience.
Lauren lifted her dress slightly as they walked along a quiet path. Meanwhile, James kept making her laugh.
Portraits should never feel uncomfortable. They should simply feel like a break from the busy day.
As someone offering wedding photography near Leeds and Harrogate, venues like Rudding Park are fantastic.
Every turn offers another perfect photo location and even if it rains the interior space is amazing. You’d run short on time before you’d run short on places to shoot.
Drinks Reception and Laughter
Back at the reception area, the party atmosphere was building.
Guests were already deep in conversation. Meanwhile, drinks continued to appear as if by magic.
Lauren and James moved from group to group chatting and catching up with family and friends.
I shoot with a long lens here as I want to observe the action – just not be part of it!
This part of the day often flies past. However, it’s also full of brilliant natural moments.
The wedding breakfast and then heartfelt speeches followed!
Hero Images!
Later in the day, we make of our way through the hotel to take some of the more wow images that I often get booked for, including that wonderful staircase!
And then…. it was on to ….
The First Dance and Party Time
Soon enough, it was time for the first dance.
Guests gathered around the dancefloor while the music began.
Lauren and James stepped forward together and started dancing shortly forward by our sax player really getting the party started.
Why Rudding Park Hotel Is Perfect for Weddings
After photographing weddings across Yorkshire, Rudding Park Hotel near Harrogate and Leeds remains one of my favourite venues.
The gardens are beautiful regardless of the time of year.
Couples can enjoy the day without worrying about logistics.
That combination creates the perfect wedding atmosphere.
From a photographer’s perspective, the venue offers endless backdrops for natural, posed and those all important statement photos!
However, the real magic always comes from the couples themselves and as this was my first wedding of the year we were off to a flying start!
Final Thoughts
Lauren and James created a wedding day full of laughter, energy, and genuine moments of love and emotion.
Nothing felt forced. Everything simply flowed.
